STYLE FILES // Carine Roitfeld // How to Dress Like the French

"I'm Parisian. It shows in my style and in the style of my photos."
Carine Roitfeld

Fashion editor and style icon Carine Roitfeld can do no wrong when it comes to styling herself. Always polished and effortlessly chic, Roitfeld has earned her place as one of the most revered and admired women in fashion today. The former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris follows a few simple styling rules that can be adopted in your own wardrobe to put a little more 'je ne said quoi' in your step.

1. Simplicity is Key
Classic French styling means never looking like you've tried too hard. Carine always looks polished but never contrived, making it look like she spent no longer than five minutes in front of the mirror to get dressed. Carine often chooses statement classic dresses paired with a killer pair of ankle boots for an effortless impact.

2. Less is More
Focusing on interesting shapes and colour combinations and steering away from over-the-top embellishments, Roitfeld sticks to quintessential Parisian styling by keeping it simple with a twist. Invest in versatile pieces that can be paired with other items in your wardrobe in different ways such as classic shirts and staple trench coats. Carine's go-to basics are largely from her husband's luxury label, Equipment

3. Neutrals, Black, and more Neutrals
Carine's wardrobe colour staples, like many French women, consist of black, white, grey and neutral tones. These trans-seasonal hues are versatile to style and are effortlessly chic and laid-back. This Autumn if you're going to invest in one piece to carry you through the colder seasons for years to come, make like Roitfeld and splash out on the iconic long Burberry Kensington trench in either stone or black.

4. Don't Waste your Waist
Parisians have a knack at knowing what looks flattering and how to accentuate the feminine flair in what might otherwise be a masculine look. Roitfeld knows her best features are her toned legs and slender waist, so whenever she steps out she's always showing off at least one. We also know the midsection had a major moment last season with crop tops and cutouts galore, but this winter tone it down by simply cinching your waist with a strategic tuck-in of a shirt into a high-waisted skirt or with a bold belt across a done-up trench coat. Your feminine silhouette will keep layered winter outfits chic.

5. Flats
A big part of looking effortless, flat shoes are an essential part of any stylish French woman's wardrobe. Whether it be a sharp toed ankle boot, a feminine pair of ballet flats, a trendy sneaker or a masculine brogue that you go for, you'll not only last a lot longer on your feet but you'll pull off Parisian casual all the while looking like you haven't even tried.

6. Statement Pieces
Every stylish woman has an arsenal of beautifully eye-catching pieces for special occasions and Mademoiselle C is no exception. When investing in statement pieces make sure to choose carefully and consider whether the piece will still be wearable next season - there is no point buying into a trend that will go as quickly as it came. Often Carine will buy into statement bags, shoes and accessories to pair with her trademark classic style to add a subtle yet trendy flair to her look.
